No tidal surge in Aberdeen

In contrast to the rest of the UK

I feel a bit guilty that today’s Janathon run was along the promenade at Aberdeen beach. According to the media, the rest of the UK is flooded, cliffs are falling into the sea and nobody will have any power until March. So I write this post with the greatest sympathy for people in the south west who are genuinely suffering. I’m Scottish. I understand horrendous weather. I hope you’re being sensible and staying indoors, drinking.

I actually did about 4km today. I parked at the leisure centre and ran to the Marine Operations Centre (the control tower for the port), past other cheerful runners, families with kids on bikes, strolling elderly couples, wet dogs and surfers. At the end of the path I did my press ups and dips on the bench and started to run back, but the toddler had other ideas. I unstrapped him before he could unleash the full force of his hissy fit and helped him down the steep steps to the sand.

His workout consisted of running to the waters edge with a stone, throwing it in and then running back to get another one. Back and forth. Back and forth. I chased him, did jumping jacks (which he copied, another chance for people to judge me as a pushy parent PT-ing her son) and did a few sets of squats while he was searching for the perfect rock. A huge wave gave him a fright and he ran back to the steps so I scooped him up and ran up them, plonked him back in the buggy and ran back to the Sand Dollar, where we stopped for a coffee. After that he’d had it with the buggy so we walked back to the car, stopping to pat soggy doggies.

Day 4 complete – I hope you’re enjoying the tour of Aberdeen! Tomorrow I’ll do my pilates DVD as my back’s a bit sore, but next week I’ll do a couple of Kingswells routes, a couple of gym sessions and one of the forestry commission paths.

How’s your Janathon going?

Thanks! I get bored just running so I like to mix it up!

There will always be judgers! I remember taking my son to a supermarket on my own in one of those chest strap carriers when he was a small baby, and having a lady stop, look at me and mutter to herself "… and WHERE'S the mother?!"
